I’ve had three miscarriages, and for me they were some of the toughest parts of becoming a mother. Before I became pregnant, I never thought I would have trouble becoming pregnant. What a shock when I had not one, not two, but three miscarriages! I had such a hard time dealing with the aftermath of a miscarriage – coping through the loss. It felt so heavy.
Sometimes the things well meaning people said to me, made me really, really angry. “God has a plan for you” and phrases like that felt like pouring rubbing alcohol on a festering wound. What I really wanted people to say was “I’m so sorry this is happening to you. I don’t know why this happened, and I don’t know what to say, but I am here for you”… or something like that.
Looking back, it would have been helpful if I had turned more towards different quotes or scriptures for miscarriage. It wouldn’t have given me more answers, but it would have given me comfort and hope in those times of deep grief.

There’s a bible story in 2 Samuel 12:16-23 about David and his baby he fathered with Bathsheba. This baby died shortly after birth. After mourning and fasting for his baby that died, David said “I will go to him, but he will not return to me.” Many parents find comfort in 2 Samuel 12:23, because it shows us how we will see our babies that died again one day. Our babies won’t come back to life here on earth, but one day we will go to them and be reunited.
I find this bible verse for pregnancy loss comforting, and honestly intriguing. Who are these children we’ve lost? I am so curious… aren’t you? I think one day we will have our answers. Until then, may this bible story for miscarriage and infant loss be a comfort to you.

Psalm 139 Miscarriage
Psalm 139 is one of the most well known scriptures for miscarriage because it illustrates how God is purposeful in his creation, even in the smallest of places – a mother’s womb. Sometimes when grieving a miscarriage our minds and hearts come into conflict. Our minds tell us that “it’s just a miscarriage, it’s not that big of a deal” but our hearts tell us something quite different – that a miscarriage is a loss worth grieving over.
Psalm 139 is a great scripture for miscarriage because it shows us that an unborn baby is fearfully and wonderfully made, even if we don’t fully understand God’s purpose in the loss. God has a purpose and a plan, even for the tiniest of people, even in the midst of a miscarriage. God sees everything – this loss, our grief – and cares deeply for us, even if it doesn’t feel like it. (And maybe this is more of the shitty advice that made me so angry… but it’s also true.)
